How to Choose the Best Furniture Store

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

When deciding on a furniture store to do business with, there are several important factors to consider and many options to decide on. First, you’ll want to think of the type of furniture you’re interested in purchasing, although a great number of stores and furniture dealers have pieces in a wide variety of styles that are designed to blend in with any type of décor.

Fortunately, several stores offer layaway or interest free plans to qualified customers on purchases over a certain amount. Many stores also have sales near most holidays, with some having end of the season clearance events as well as rebates and a variety of discounts.

Also when choosing a place to buy furniture, inquire ahead of time about their shipping and delivery policies, and find out if there are any extra fees involved for assembling or setting up the furniture after delivery. Some stores will also haul away old furniture as well, but may charge extra for the service. It’s also smart to choose a furniture store with the reputation of good customer service and return policies.

A good furniture store will have everything necessary to completely furnish a room, not only couches, chairs, and tables, but also lighting, rugs, with some even having window treatments, bedding, mattresses, pictures, wall hangings, and a host of other decorative accessories.

For the bedroom, the best stores should have a choice of beds in every size and style, from four poster beds complete with head and footboards, as well as futons and daybeds, bunk beds, and a variety of children’s beds and furniture. The best type of youth furniture collections are those that are durable and adjustable so that they “grow” along with the child.

If you have the luxury of consulting with an interior designer, ask them about their experiences with different companies, or which store they might recommend. The internet is an excellent place to read reviews from customers who’ve already shopped at a certain store, or who offer their tips and hints about sales and deals at certain retailers.

You can also use the internet to find all of the stores in your area and read about what services they may offer as well as their locations and hours of operation. Most furniture manufacturers today have their own web site to showcase their selections and offer information about the company. By choosing a furniture store with a web site, you’ll have the option of browsing through their collections before heading out to the stores.

Some web sites selling furniture also feature interactive tools where you can enter the dimensions of a room, and move pieces of virtual furniture around to see how the placement should be before your new furniture is even delivered to your home.

Most stores will also have catalogs featuring all of the furniture they offer, with some even having the option of special orders, in which the customer can indicate their preferences or specifics about the furniture they would like to purchase. Of course this option more than likely will come at a higher price than furniture that is mass produced.

The Right Office Furniture

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Office furniture is about comfort, functionality, appearance and value. These things apply to both home offices and traditional business work environments. Granted, many people settle for furniture that gets the job done, and that works. But, with a little thought and effort, the workplace (wherever it is) can be enhanced with the right selection of office furniture.

Office furniture should, first and foremost, be comfortable to use. Anyone who works at a desk knows the importance of this aspect. The right chair means finding one that can be adjusted to adequately fit your specific body. The right desk means it is big enough for the tasks at hand, has adequate drawers and / or cubbies, and has enough leg room for you to work with a little freedom. A desk that is too small for your chair and legs to maneuver under properly is frustrating and annoying. Work in comfort and you will be more productive, and certainly more content.

Functionality of office furniture means it actually does what it was designed to do. Store lots of books, manuals, and software? Then make sure your bookshelf can handle the weight. If your desk has a credenza to go along with it, make sure that it is a height you are happy with. Turning from a task on your regular desk to one on your credenza should be seamless. Side tables, conference tables, end tables, and all sorts of other surfaces need to be at good heights. If at all possible, find units that can be adjusted to suit different people. Keeping everyone happy can be quite a challenge when you are buying for an entire office, but this sort of effort will help.

Of course, office furniture that looks great is not only nice, but in many office environments, is essential. You don’t want your place of business to make you look sloppy, tacky, cheap, or just plain lazy. I admit a bit of hypocrisy on this point, as my work area tends to look like a tornado just went through. The point is, find pieces that look good to you and represent the type of feeling you want to portray to your employees, clients, or most importantly, your spouse! Finally, office furniture should represent value. A $20 particle board desk may be a great value for a college kid who just needs something to get her by. Great. No problem. However, that same desk would not be a good value for someone with a greater demand for functionality and appearance. Value is purely subjective, so give it some thought at least.
